Epoxy vs. Flake vs. Metallic vs. Polished Concrete: Which Floor Is Right for You?

If you are shopping for a new garage floor, you have probably seen the words epoxy, flake, chip, metallic and polished concrete used almost interchangeably. They are not the same thing. Each one looks different, feels different underfoot and suits a different kind of space. This guide explains the four options in plain language so you can walk into your estimate knowing what you want.

The Four Options

Know the Four Floor Systems

Option 1

Solid Color Epoxy

A solid color epoxy floor is a coating that bonds to prepared concrete and gives it a smooth, uniform color. It covers the gray slab with a clean, finished look and is easier to keep clean than bare concrete. Because the surface is smooth, it can be slick when wet unless texture is added. Solid epoxy is a simple, clean choice, but it does not hide dust and small debris as well as a flake floor.

Option 2

Flake (Chip) Floors

A flake floor, also called a chip floor, is one of the most popular garage floor systems. After the concrete is prepared, a base coat goes down, decorative color flakes are broadcast across it, and a clear protective top coat seals everything in. The flakes add color, texture and grip, and the speckled pattern hides everyday dust and dirt between cleanings. That combination is why flake is such a popular choice for working garages. Option 3

Metallic Epoxy

Metallic epoxy uses pigments that create a flowing, high-gloss finish with depth and movement, so no two floors look exactly alike. It is a showpiece floor. Homeowners often choose it for converted garages, bonus rooms and other spaces where the floor is meant to be the focal point. Like other glossy finishes, it can be slick when wet. See examples on our metallic epoxy floors page.

Option 4

Polished Concrete

Polished concrete is not a coating at all. Instead of adding a layer on top, we diamond grind the existing slab through progressively finer grits, harden it and seal it, so the concrete itself becomes the finished floor. It is very low maintenance and works well in garages, homes, showrooms, warehouses and retail spaces. Because it is the original slab, it shows the character of that concrete, including old stains and patches. Read more about concrete grinding and polishing.

Option 5

Quartz

Quartz: colored quartz aggregate broadcast into a resin base and sealed with a clear topcoat. Textured, slip-resistant and very tough. Great for garages, pool decks and commercial spaces. Learn more on our quartz floor coatings page.

Choosing

Which Floor Is Right for Your Garage?

Start with how you actually use the space.

You park in it every day, store tools and want something tough and forgiving. Choose flake. The texture adds grip, the pattern hides dust, and it is a popular choice for Orange County garages. See our garage floor coatings page.

You want a clean, simple look and do not mind a smoother surface. Solid color epoxy can be a good fit.

Your garage is a showroom, a gym or a converted living space. Metallic epoxy gives you a floor people will talk about.

You like the look of concrete and want the lowest upkeep. Polished concrete keeps the slab and makes it the floor.

Your concrete has a lot of cracks and stains. A flake system usually hides imperfections best, because the concrete is prepped and repaired before the coating goes down and the flake pattern adds visual texture.

Whatever you choose, the prep matters more than anything. A good floor starts with grinding the concrete and repairing cracks so the system bonds properly. Most garages are done in 1-2 days.
